The weeks before: a gentle checklist
Small, practical steps that make a real difference later.

Most people find the weeks before surgery pass quickly. Rather than trying to do everything at once, it helps to work slowly through a few areas: your body, your plans, your home and your support.
Your body
- :Keep moving in whatever way feels comfortable. Walking and gentle stretching can support your recovery.
- :Eat regular, balanced meals with protein at each one. Your body uses it to repair tissue.
- :If you smoke or vape, ask your team about stopping. Nicotine can slow wound healing (the way skin and tissue close and repair).
Your plans
- :Confirm your arrival time and where to go.
- :Arrange a ride home. Most people can't drive after anesthesia (medicine that keeps you asleep or comfortable during surgery).
- :Make a simple list of your current medications to bring along.
Your support
Think about who could help for the first few days: a partner, family member, friend or neighbor. Even small offers, like picking up groceries, can feel enormous when you're recovering.
