Hydration, before and after

Why fluids matter, and gentle ways to keep up.

3 min read · re: editorial

Staying hydrated supports circulation, digestion and energy. After surgery, especially if your appetite is low or pain medicine leaves you sluggish, it's easy to fall behind.

  • :Keep a water bottle within reach of where you rest.
  • :Sip regularly rather than drinking large amounts at once.
  • :Warm drinks, broths and water-rich foods like fruit all count.
  • :Pale yellow urine is generally a sign you're well hydrated.

A note on constipation

Some pain medications can cause constipation (difficulty having a bowel movement). Fluids, fiber and gentle movement help. Ask your team about safe options if it becomes uncomfortable.
